Our team adheres to the NYS Federation’s K9 standards for all K9 team certifications.

Our team standards (non-K9) are as follows:

Searchers

 All members of Western New York SearchDogs are required to be at “Searcher” status or above, regardless whether they have a dog or not. The Minimum Requirements to become a Searcher include the following:

  • Must demonstrate knowledge of radio codes & procedures, map & compass skills, search types & procedures.
  • Must complete NY State DEC Wildlands Search course or equivalent.
  • Must successfully complete day and night 1 mile compass courses.
  • Must have all recommended equipment in possession.
  • Must have completed minimum medical training at the Advanced First Aid level or higher & possess current CPR for the Professional Rescuer card.
  • Must know search procedures and how to properly lead a team on Type I, Mod Type I, Type II, Mod Type II, Type III and the laying down of a baseline.
  • Must complete a 3 hour Mantracking course.
  • Must pass a practical and written exam with at least 70% accuracy.
  • Upon completion of other requirements acceptance by the team requires a unanimous vote by all team members.

Team Leader

  • Must meet criteria for Searcher status.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 searches with at least 3 hours of grid team work at each search.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to lead the team in the field.
  • Upon successful completion of all requirements the team members will review for approval or disapproval of the upgrade.
  • Must have been a member for at least one year.

Search Manager

  • Minimum of 10 searches with at least two as an assistant search manager.
  • Must have been a team leader for at least 3 years.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work with government agencies, SAR teams, the press and the public.
  • Must have worked with K-9 units, either during training sessions or during searches.
  • Must have performed as Search Manager at a minimum of two training sessions; including setting up search headquarters, search areas and the deployment of SAR teams.
  • Must successfully complete the NASAR (National Assoc. of Search & Rescue) Managing the Search Function course.
  • Upon successful completion of all requirements the team members will review for approval or disapproval of the upgrade.
